Take Charge of Your Health:
Four Reasons to Make Fitness a Priority |
A Word to the Wise from Fitness Expert Billy Blanks
Living in the world today is challenging enough as it is. The pressure to get ahead, take care of family, and be a good husband is tougher than ever. No wonder taking care of ourselves is sometimes the farthest thing from our minds. However, it is time to step back, reevaluate and then take charge of our health.
Being the man of the house comes with lots of responsibilities. The need to provide for our family is so strong that it sometimes overrides everything else in our lives—especially our health. So here are just four reasons to make fitness a priority in your life.
Fit for the Task. Our role as head of the household is an important one and should not be taken lightly. We are a strong “rock” in our families’ lives and we carry a lot on our shoulders. This is exactly why it is important for us to take better care of ourselves. We, as the head of our households, should lead by example and model a healthy life.
It’s easy for us to show focus and discipline on the job, or leadership when we are responsible for a particular project; we are right on top of it. Sometimes, however, when it comes to getting in shape, our focus and discipline can lack. Being healthy and staying physically fit should be a top priority in a man’s life. It will only enhance the things that we already know how to do—like take care of our families, perform well on our jobs and be the leaders that God has called us to be.
Fit for Life. Another important reason we need to focus on fitness, men, is that little
pain in the neck (literally for some of us) called “stress.” Statistics tell us that men in general live far more stressful lives than women. Men, stress is a killer. It will take you out of here before you know it, if you don’t find some way to release it. Stress can cause heart attacks, overeating, and alcoholism- just to name a few. It’s time, right now, to beat stress, before it beats us.
Fit for Love. Now, men, let’s have a little “guy talk.” We all know how much we love for our women to be fit, healthy and to look nice for us. Well, don’t be fooled, they think it is important for us to be fit, healthy and to look nice for them, too! They feel special when we go out of our way to be in shape and dress nice for them. Watch them smile with joy when one of their girlfriends comment on how great you look. They love for their man to be strong, healthy and handsome. They appreciate it and will definitely let you know.
Fit for Family. Need to spend more time with your spouse? There’s no better way than to do something fitness oriented. Go for a bike ride. Go on a hike, or start an exercise regimen. It’s a great time for the two of you to be together and to communicate. You will encourage the other to keep it up. Before you know it, it will become a family affair! Your kids will become active, and you will have an overall active and healthy family.
Eat Right. Now that you understand the reasons why we need to be healthy, let's talk about the mechanics. Proper nutrition is important. Find a sensible diet that fits your personality. Think of food as you do gas for your car. If you put cheap gas in the tank, it will run badly. If you put the right gas in, it will run a long way.
Stick with it! Here are some important tips to sticking to an exercise program: It’s a great idea, when first starting out, to find something you like to do. Exercise can come in many forms, such as running, playing basketball, lifting weights, etc. Be sure to start slowly at first, as your muscles will be sore. Don’t jump in over your head. Be smart, and find out as much information about the particular program you are about to start as possible. Knowledge is power and the more you know about something, the more you will enjoy it and likely stick to it.
The most important tip for sticking with a program is to know what it takes: it takes your mind and your will. When you know that your mind and your will control everything that you do, you will be successful. Be sure to realize that your mind and your will cause you to make decisions, and those decisions are responsible for the actions that you take. So men, make the decision right now, to take charge of your health. You’ll be glad you did.
